Job Description

About Check

Payroll is broken. It's still running on decades-old infrastructure. We're rebuilding it.

We don't run payroll ourselves — we power the businesses that do. As the inventors of embedded payroll, we're redefining how people get paid and making it easier for those businesses to launch, grow, and thrive.

On our team, you'll use creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and grit to simplify the complexity of payroll for thousands of employers of every size, across all industries. We ignore conventional role boundaries in favor of the unique strengths and values each builder brings to our mission: make paying people simple. Check out our origin story!

Check is far more than just API infrastructure. We’re a springboard for building and scaling payroll businesses. See how it works for our partners.

The work

We're seeking a Risk Analyst to own company reviews, payroll monitoring, and fraud escalation with precision and clear communication across teams and partners. You'll build deep domain fluency along the way, contribute directly to the documentation and feedback loops that help us continuously improve our risk systems, and pitch in on analysis and improvement projects.

In this role, you will:

  • Own and execute company reviews, payroll monitoring, and related processes with precision and clear communication across teams, partners, and customers.

  • Analyze data to spot and act on emerging risk signals for companies and payrolls.

  • Mitigate fraud incidents (account takeover, first-party fraud, impersonation, etc.), document insights, and drive resolutions with cross-functional teams.

  • Contribute to documentation and process feedback loops as you build domain expertise.

  • Support ad hoc analyses and small process-improvement projects alongside the team's senior analysts.

Many backgrounds could fit this role, but ideal candidates will have some or all of the following:

  • 1-3 years of experience in risk and fraud investigation or a similar fintech analytics role

  • Detail-oriented working style and ability to manage investigations from start to finish

  • Excellent time management skills and ability to handle multiple cases simultaneously

  • Clear and professional communication with internal teams and external parties

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, data-driven environment and/or out of a busy queue

  • Comfort making judgment calls under ambiguity: knowing when to escalate versus resolve a case independently, without a hard rule for every edge case

  • An AI-adopter mindset, capable of iterating to solve complex problems and questioning / digging deeper on the output you receive

  • Curiousity and willingness to learn new tools and skills (SQL experience is a plus, but not required)

  • Ability to attend our annual 3-day company offsite in the spring

Travel & Office Policy

The Check team is distributed across the US. Roles can be remote, hybrid, or based in one of our offices in New York City or San Francisco. We offer ample opportunities and encourage employees to attend team offsites, events, and hackathons throughout year. All Checketeers gather in the spring for our annual 3-day company retreat.

For our in-office and hybrid employees, our offices are open all week. We provide meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays and there are regular happy hours, game nights, and other in-person events.

Remote work at Check requires the ability to perform all responsibilities without distraction or disruption, while maintaining quality, effective communication, and productivity.
