The Waymo Safety team works to promote and help to continuously improve the safety of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our experts develop safety goals and strategies, and conduct safety engineering analyses to ensure safety is being considered throughout the design and development of our vehicles. The team develops and promotes safety strategies and policies for autonomous vehicles for its work with regulatory authorities, lawmakers, law enforcement and public and non-profit organizations. Our Safety Team also helps advise on compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.

As Waymo’s first Field Safety Engineer in the United Kingdom, you will serve as Waymo’s primary engineering/technical liaison with safety regulators in the United Kingdom, working closely with Waymo’s Policy, Legal, and other teams in the UK. You will also work with Waymo’s Field Safety team in the United States to identify and analyze issues that could impact the safety of Waymo’s fleet of autonomous vehicles, with a focus on issues specific to Waymo’s operations in the United Kingdom. 

This role is based in London, reporting to Waymo’s Head of Field Safety, Europe based in California. 

You will:

  • You will serve as Waymo’s primary liaison on post-deployment safety with automotive and traffic safety regulators in the UK, e.g. VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) and TfL (Transport for London). You will work with Waymo’s Policy, Legal, and other teams to establish and maintain proactive outreach and respond to regulatory requests.
  • You will work with Waymo’s Field Safety team in the United States to identify and analyze issues that could impact the safety of Waymo’s fleet of autonomous vehicles, bringing your local UK perspective to help identify and prioritize issues that could impact Waymo’s operations in the UK.
  • You will act as the lead for Field Safety issues impacting Waymo's operations in the UK.
  • You have willingness and ability to participate in regular shifts as part of a 24/7 Safety on-call rotation, which is an integral part of Waymo’s incident response capabilities.

 

You have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical degree.
  • 10+ years of engineering or other technical experience in automotive or another transportation field.
  • Experience with the UK's automotive and/or transportation regulatory framework and familiarity with expectations when working with these regulators.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively with Policy, Legal, Operations, Engineering and other internal teams in UK, Europe and in the United States.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills and the ability to establish and maintain professional presence with regulators in the UK.
  • Ability to work occasionally in the evenings to collaborate with the US-based Field Safety team.

 

We prefer:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experience interacting with automotive and traffic safety regulators.
  • Familiarity with autonomous vehicle technology.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, rapidly-scaling company.
  • Familiarity with SMS, Safety Case and/or UNECE Automated Driving System regulations.

 

The expected base salary range for this full-time position is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.  Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
