What You’ll Do
NetDocuments is seeking a Staff Software Engineer – Developer Experience to help shape how software is built and delivered across our engineering organization. As a member of our Developer Experience (DevX) team, you’ll build the tools, platforms, and workflows that remove friction between writing code and shipping high-quality software to production. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who combines strong hands-on development skills with the ability to influence technical direction and drive improvements across multiple engineering teams. You’ll operate with a high degree of autonomy, treating engineers as your customers and identifying high-leverage opportunities to improve developer productivity, platform consistency, and engineering velocity. You’ll also play a key role in advancing AI-assisted development practices and creating scalable solutions that make our engineering organization more effective.
You will:
Developer Tooling & Platforms
- Design, build, and maintain internal CLI tools, code generators, service scaffolding, and repository standards that create consistent development paths for engineers.
- Own and optimize CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, and related technologies.
- Build and evolve internal developer portals and self-service capabilities, including service catalogs, environment provisioning, and secrets management.
- Establish and improve reusable tooling and platform capabilities that can be adopted across engineering teams.
- Measure developer experience through build times, deployment frequency, DORA metrics, and other engineering productivity signals to identify opportunities for improvement.
AI & Automation Enablement
- Build tooling that integrates AI-assisted development into everyday engineering workflows, including coding assistants, MCP servers, and IDE integrations.
- Develop automation that reduces engineering toil across code reviews, testing, documentation, dependency management, and environment setup.
- Evaluate emerging AI developer technologies and build proof-of-concepts to determine opportunities for broader adoption.
- Establish scalable patterns and practices that help engineering teams effectively leverage AI throughout the software development lifecycle.
Engineering Standards & Architecture
- Define and evolve shared libraries, linting configurations, PR templates, branching strategies, and coding standards across the engineering organization.
- Establish patterns and technical standards that improve consistency, maintainability, and developer productivity across teams.
- Build and maintain technical documentation systems, including architecture decision records, repository standards, onboarding guides, and AI-ready development documentation.
- Drive inner source practices that enable engineers to safely and effectively contribute across team and repository boundaries.
Ownership & Operational Excellence
- Own developer-facing tools and platforms from architecture and implementation through deployment and ongoing operation.
- Identify and resolve developer workflow issues, pipeline failures, tooling gaps, and build-system bottlenecks.
- Instrument internal platforms with logging, monitoring, and telemetry to understand performance and reliability.
- Reduce technical debt across shared engineering infrastructure, build systems, and developer tooling.
- Gather feedback from engineers, prioritize high-impact opportunities, and iteratively improve the developer experience.
Technical Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as a technical leader for Developer Experience initiatives that span multiple engineering teams.
- Partner with engineering teams to identify systemic pain points and design solutions that improve productivity at scale.
- Collaborate closely with Platform Engineering, SRE, Security, and other technical teams on shared infrastructure and integration points.
- Influence technical direction and drive adoption of developer tooling, standards, and engineering practices across the organization.
- Share knowledge through documentation, technical guidance, training, and hands-on developer enablement.
Continuous Learning & Innovation
- Stay current with emerging developer platforms, AI-assisted development technologies, and software engineering practices.
- Evaluate new tools and technologies based on their ability to measurably improve developer productivity and software delivery.
- Experiment with new approaches, validate their impact, and establish scalable patterns for broader engineering adoption.
What You’ll Need to Be Successful
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience with developer tooling, platform engineering, or build and release infrastructure.
- Proven experience designing and building internal tools or platforms used by engineering teams.
- Strong proficiency in one or more of Python, TypeScript/Node.js, C#/.NET, or Go, with the ability to work effectively across multiple technology stacks.
- Strong experience designing, building, and optimizing CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar technologies.
- Experience developing CLI tools, automation, and scripting using technologies such as Bash, Python, or Node.js.
- Experience with REST APIs, microservices architectures, and modern software delivery patterns.
- Strong understanding of version control workflows, branching strategies, and monorepo and polyrepo architectures.
- Experience implementing logging, monitoring, telemetry, and observability for production systems.
What Will Make You Stand Out
- Experience building internal developer portals or service catalogs using Backstage or similar technologies.
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, MCP servers, or similar technologies.
- Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform, AWS CDK, or CloudFormation.
- Experience building and operating solutions using AWS services such as ECS, S3, DynamoDB, SQS, and Lambda.
- Experience using developer productivity metrics, DORA metrics, or developer satisfaction data to prioritize engineering investments.
- Contributions to open-source developer tooling or experience driving inner source programs.
- Experience building developer enablement programs, technical training, or engineering documentation systems.
- Experience building B2B SaaS products in regulated industries.
