Position Summary

Reporting to the Head of Special Missions – Australia, the Head of Training and Checking (HOTC) is responsible for the development, recruitment, selection, qualification, standardisation, and continuous improvement of the organisation's flight crew training system in accordance with the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR), CASA Part 138 requirements, the Operations Manual, and the Safety Management System (SMS). The HOTC ensures that all flight crew members, aircrew, check and training personnel maintain the competency, qualifications, and operational proficiency necessary to safely conduct aerial work operations.

Reporting directly to the Accountable Manager and working closely with the Head of Flying Operations (HOFO), Head of Safety, and other operational leaders, the HOTC provides strategic and operational leadership for training standards, competency assessment, flight crew development, regulatory compliance, and operational readiness.

The HOTC is responsible for ensuring that all training, checking, recency, and proficiency programs are conducted to the highest professional standards, supporting a culture of safety, standardization, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across the organization.

What You'll Do

• Develop, implement, and maintain the organization's approved training and checking system ensuring ongoing compliance with CASA regulations, Part 138 requirements, operator authorisations, and internal procedures.
• Design and oversee initial, recurrent, conversion, upgrade, and remedial training programs tailored to the specific nature of the missions and operating areas
• Manage the conduct of flight crew proficiency checks, line checks, competency assessments, and operator proficiency requirements
• Monitor and evaluate training effectiveness through quality assurance, auditing, data analysis, and safety performance indicators
• Provide leadership, supervision, and standardization of aviation instructional personnel
• Coordinate with the Safety Manager for specific events and trend analysis to identify training requirements arising from incidents, audits, risk assessments, and safety investigations
• Ensure operational standardization across fleets, bases, and mission profiles
• Liaise with CASA and other regulatory stakeholders on matters relating to training, checking, competency, and operational approvals
• Promote a positive safety culture and professional development environment throughout the organization

What You Bring

• Extensive operational experience in aerial work, special mission, or commercial aviation operations
• Demonstrated experience in flight crew training, checking, competency management, and instructional leadership
• CASA ATPL(A)/CPL(A) and Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating with appropriate aircraft type ratings, qualifications and experience to support Beechcraft King Air and Bombardier Jet operations
• Strong understanding of CASR Part 138, associated MOS requirements, SMS principles, and aviation safety regulations
• Practical experience applying aviation safety standards, Safety Management Systems (SMS), and operational risk management principles
• Strong leadership, organisational, strategic thinking, communication, stakeholder management and workforce development skills
• Current Australian Passport and ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Security Clearance
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Learning Management Systems (LMS), and training management software
• Ability to periodically deploy in support of operational training, standardisation, evaluations, and test activities
