Job Description

Interaction and Motion designer

Description -

About the Role

We're building the operating system for a next-generation device, and we're looking for a talented Interaction Designer to shape how it feels to use.

This role is centered around interaction design and motion — the details that make an interface feel alive, responsive, intuitive, and delightful. You'll define how the OS behaves at a moment-to-moment level: how things move, respond, transition, provide feedback, and communicate state.

Your primary focus will be bringing craft, consistency, and delight to the experience across the OS. You'll help define the interaction language of the product and ensure that interactions feel cohesive rather than a collection of individual features.

Alongside this, you'll contribute to selected UX and UI projects with the broader design team, either independently or in collaboration with other designers.

What You'll Do

  • Define what "delight" means for the product and translate it into thoughtful, purposeful interactions across the OS.
  • Own the interaction design and micro-animation layer of the OS, including transitions, spatial relationships, feedback, gestures, states, loading, success/error, sound, haptics and other moment-to-moment behaviors.
  • Collaborate with product designers, product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to brainstorm and develop interaction concepts for the device.
  • Define and maintain a consistent interaction language so that behaviors across the OS feel unified and intentional, across different modal behaviors like touch, trackpad, keyboard and stylus.
  • Build, maintain, and evolve an interaction library covering reusable patterns, behaviors, motion principles, timing, and transitions.
  • Contribute to the broader design system and work with other designers to ensure interaction patterns are documented, consistent, and reusable.
  • Prototype interactions using tools such as Figma, Principle, ProtoPie, After Effects, or code-based prototyping.
  • Use prototypes to communicate not just visual behavior, but also motion, timing, sound, feedback, and overall feel.
  • Partner closely with engineering throughout implementation to ensure interactions are brought to life with a high level of design fidelity.
  • Review builds, identify interaction or motion inconsistencies, and work with engineers to refine the experience while taking feasibility and performance into account.
  • Explore emerging interaction patterns, motion techniques, and interaction paradigms across leading products globally, bringing relevant ideas and inspiration into the product.
  • Contribute to UX and UI projects across the product team, either independently owning selected projects or supporting other UX designers with interaction design and prototyping.

What We're Looking For

  • A portfolio that clearly demonstrates strong interaction design and motion/micro-animation craft. This is the most important qualification for this role.
  • The ability to take ownership of interactions across an OS and drive them from concept through implementation with engineering.
  • Strong prototyping skills — you're comfortable communicating interactions through working prototypes rather than static screens alone.
  • An understanding of motion as a tool for usability, hierarchy, feedback, continuity, and delight — not simply as visual decoration.
  • Strong design judgment and restraint: knowing when motion adds value and when simplicity is the better experience.
  • Working knowledge of design systems and how interaction patterns can be made consistent, reusable, and scalable.
  • Comfort working across both craft-heavy interaction design and broader product design work.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions to product managers, designers, engineers, and leadership.
  • The ability to work directly with engineers on implementation details and advocate for interaction quality and design fidelity.
  • Experience working with sound or other forms of sensory feedback as part of interaction design.

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing for an OS-level, system-level, or gaming platform, rather than only individual applications.
  • Experience with tablet, mobile, or multi-modal interaction design involving combinations of touch, keyboard, pen, or other input methods.
  • Familiarity with the performance considerations of animation on devices, including frame rates, GPU constraints, and how these influence interaction design decisions.
  • A background in motion design, game UI, or consumer products with rich micro-interactions.

Education & Experience Recommended
• Four-year or Graduate Degree in Design, Human Factors Engineering, Social Sciences research, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience or demonstrated competence.

Around 5 years of experience across UI, UX, and, most importantly, interaction design.
