Job Description

The Role:

The Assistant Mill Manager is responsible to ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, provide product stewardship information and maintain the ISO management system for the Edmundston and Madawaska mills.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure company-wide environmental compliance and identify areas for improvement.

  • Develop, implement and monitor environmental strategies, policies and sustainability programs.

  • Resolve environmental issues and establish preventive procedures.

  • Maintain relationships with federal and provincial environmental authorities.

  • Oversee and update the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) system.

  • Screen new chemicals, trial memos and process changes for compliance.

  • Provide guidance and data for Green Transformation Projects.

  • Deliver product stewardship information to customers and ensure products meet American, Canadian and EU regulations.

  • Supply regulatory information to product development and production teams regarding chemical usage.

  • Oversee the ISO Management System, ensuring internal audits, corrective actions, document updates and annual audits.

  • Communicate management philosophy, expectations, objectives and results across the department.

  • Ensure company policies, practices and procedures are implemented and followed.

  • Oversee training, organizational development, succession planning and performance management for direct reports.

  • Ensure the department is appropriately staffed for current and future business needs.

  • Promote healthy labor relations and ensure adherence to collective agreement articles.

  • Participate in grievance and labor‑management meetings within a unionized environment.

  • Represent the company on internal and external committees.

Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations (Federal, Provincial, U.S., Canadian, EU).

  • Experience developing and implementing environmental policies, sustainability programs and compliance frameworks.

  • Ability to manage relationships with regulatory authorities.

  • Familiarity with MSDS systems, chemical screening processes and product stewardship.

  • Experience with ISO Management Systems, audits and corrective action processes.

  • Strong communication skills for conveying management philosophy, expectations and results.

  • Experience in training, organizational development, succession planning and performance management.

  • Ability to manage staffing needs and lead teams through changing business demands.

  • Experience working in a unionized environment and handling labor relations.

  • Ability to represent the organization in committees and cross‑functional groups.
