Job Description:
Technologist Industrial Oil takes the mission of delivering integrated technical solutions and added value to internal and external customers in a safe, professional, reliable and efficient way, with solid understanding of industrial lubricant formulation, applied technologies and field application requirements.
The role focuses on industrial oil portfolios, including but not limited to industrial gear oils, hydraulic oils, turbine and circulating oils, compressor oils, heat transfer oils and other related specialty industrial oils. Technologist Industrial Oil will act as an important part of Castrol local technical platform and global technology community, supporting the development, deployment, maintenance and technical service of industrial oil products to meet current and future customer needs.
Technologist Industrial Oil will play leader/driver or supporter role in technical programs (projects, cases or tasks), especially new formulation development, formulation changes, technical support and service and expert opinions input, targeting business growth and technology innovation. The technologist will dedicate to technical programs following an integrated end-to-end process covering the whole product service life or solution offering cycle as the Single Point of Accountability (SPA) in technology team, categorized by product portfolio, industrial sectors or application scenarios.
Key Results/ Accountabilities expected from role
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure daily operations for fulfilling responsibilities in a safe manner and conform to Castrol value, code of conduct and internal policies.
Formulation Technology
- Understand industrial oil formulation technologies, including base oil selection, additive chemistry, viscosity grade design, oxidation control, anti-wear/extreme pressure performance, foam control, filterability, seal compatibility and other key performance requirements relevant to industrial oil applications.
- Be capable of managing complete product development, technical assessment and product maintenance processes, from ideas/concept, formulation selection to commercialization and post-launch for new products, following internal project management tools.
- Develop practical understanding of key industrial oil portfolios, such as industrial gear oils, hydraulic oils, turbine and circulating oils, compressor oils, heat transfer oils and other specialty industrial oils, including their product characteristics, performance standards, application requirements and common failure modes.
- Translate application requirements from typical industrial sectors, including wind energy, metal, mining, cement, power generation and machinery lubrication, into appropriate formulation assessment, product selection, technical recommendation and customer support activities.
Product Applied Technology:
- Demonstrate skillful practices in handling trouble-shooting cases by following systematic methods and utilizing various problem-solving tools.
- Support cross-region technical assessment and product deployment related to industrial oil performance, including bench test data review, used oil analysis interpretation, application risk assessment, product documentation and comparison with relevant industry or OEM requirements.
- Build up effective working procedures, schedules and methods to manage routine work, like technical reports, records and plans.
- Support cross-functional coordination for C4C, localization and related business/technology workstreams by tracking actions, consolidating technical inputs and maintaining project documentation.
- Support operation unit and supply chain in handling topics including root cause analysis of quality issues, customer complaints and products documents.
Project Management
- Ensure daily operation of technical programs following internal project management policies.
- Lead or support projects in Castrol internal project management systems and contribute valuable ideas which will benefit technology competence or business growth.
- Maintain and update project management documents on a regular basis.
Key long term challenges faced in the role
The key challenge of this role is to build strong industrial oil technical capability while operating in a cross-region and cross-functional environment. The role must balance day-to-day technical support, C4C/Localization coordination and digital enablement with disciplined project follow-up, accurate documentation and timely stakeholder communication. It also needs to develop broader insight into formulation technology, application requirements, internal processes and data-driven working methods to improve team efficiency and support business growth.
Experience & Expertise (mandatory & desired)
- Good understanding of industrial lubrication technology, tribology and machinery lubrication systems, with willingness to deepen expertise in related industrial oil applications.
- Basic to intermediate experience in industrial lubricant formulation, product assessment, laboratory testing, technical service, field trial support or quality/problem-solving activities is preferred. Experience in industrial oil products is an advantage.
- Proven broad experience of product development and technology deployment, especially the capabilities of developing an idea to a solution.
- Experience or strong interest in cross-region technical collaboration and cross-functional coordination with Marketing, Sales, Procurement, Supply Chain and Quality teams.
- Digital mindset and capability to support dashboards, data recording, reporting automation, knowledge management or internal digital tools.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, with ability to work across teams, regions and cultures in written and oral practices.
- Degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Engineering or related technical discipline.
