Backend & Infrastructure Engineer

Job Description
About the Role
Join a fast-growing B2B SaaS company building physics-based simulation software for large-scale commercial battery storage projects. The platform helps installers, wholesalers, and distributors size, model, and sell battery projects — replacing manual spreadsheets with precise, data-driven proposals backed by year-round dispatch simulations at 15-minute resolution.
Each simulation compares hundreds of battery variants across multiple stacked application scenarios (peak shaving, arbitrage, grid services, and more), producing millions of data points per run. The results guide high-stakes investment decisions, meaning correctness and reliability are non-negotiable.
The company is active across six European countries in a market that is doubling year-on-year. Compute demand is growing on three axes simultaneously: more users, higher usage per user, and increasingly complex simulations. You will be the engineer who makes 100× customer-base growth possible.
What You'll Do
Own the entire backend and infrastructure — service reliability, security, scalability, and cost control.
Design and evolve the architecture of a compute-heavy simulation engine to support rapid growth.
Work with containers, orchestration, message queues, monitoring, and performance optimisation.
Make independent architectural decisions — including whether the current Python engine should be rewritten in another language.
Continuously improve the engine's capabilities to support new battery application scenarios and market environments.
Iterate quickly alongside the product and customer feedback loop, shipping high-quality work at startup pace.
What We're Looking For
Must-haves:
5+ years owning and scaling production backend systems under real-world load.
Hands-on experience with web application infrastructure scaling: containers, orchestration, queues, monitoring, performance optimisation, and cost control.
Proficiency in Python and the ability to reason about potential rewrites in other languages.
Proven ability to design and implement backend architectures for compute-heavy, scaling workloads.
Comfort working fully independently, owning projects end-to-end, and making architectural decisions with incomplete information.
Experience with service reliability, security hardening, and production monitoring.
Early-stage startup experience with rapid iteration and high shipping velocity.
Active use of AI tools in your development workflow, with the ability to debug and validate model output independently.
Nice to have:
Experience with physics simulations or numerical computing workloads.
Background in energy markets, electrical engineering, or energy management systems.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: €110,000 – €150,000 per year
Equity: 0.5% – 2.5%, with standard 4-year vesting and 1-year cliff
Location
Based in Berlin, Germany. On-site or hybrid working arrangements are available. The interview process consists of 1–2 interviews plus a technical assessment on a real project.
