Introduction

China Castrol Technology Center (CCTC) is one of Castrol’s global R&D and technical support hubs in China, playing a critical role in enabling both local and global product development. The center integrates advanced testing, analytical capabilities, and customer-facing technical support to accelerate innovation, ensure product quality, and respond rapidly to market and OEM needs. CCTC serves as a key bridge between global research networks and local business delivery, contributing directly to business growth through technical excellence and agile execution.

The Investigational Analysis (IA) team is part of the Castrol Technology organization. The team uses its deep technical expertise across a range of analytical disciplines to provide a troubleshooting forensic service down to a molecular and structural chemistry level across organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. It combines detailed chemical interpretation and materials science experience to provide both rapid and conclusive technical solutions, to protect the business and advance its products.

Global Innovation Analytics (GIA) Shanghai IA function at CCTC shares the responsibility with deep collaboration with global IA team to deliver high quality sophisticated investigation service to varieties internal technical teams and issue fit-for purpose technical reports.

This is a Senior Analytical Technologist role within CCTC GIA Shanghai IA team, reporting to Discipline Management Lead, Shanghai.

Job Purpose:

To provide theoretical and practical analytical test expertise to support research, product development, product deployment and blend plant activities, as enabling Castrol China & AsPac business growth.

To identify, evaluate and develop technical capability and ways of working that enable Castrol to deliver business strategy at pace and to showcase our technology and build high-value relationships with our partners and customers. As senior analytical technical position, it shall have close connection with stakeholders to understand business demand and industrial development trend, taking leading responsibility to drive resource to ensure fit-for purpose capability establishment and development.

This is an operational analytical role in a team of technical specialists responsible for identifying and then carrying out investigational analysis on samples with deep technical insight, efficiency and accuracy to deliver results which meet customers’ needs.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver safe and reliable operations through commitment to Castrol’s HSSE standards, values and behaviours.
  • Provide advanced theoretical and practical expertise in analytical chemistry and materials characterization, leading complex investigations and developing innovative analytical approaches to address business-critical challenges. Translate scientific findings into business recommendations that support product development, manufacturing, OEM customer support and quality decisions.
  • Engage proactively with stakeholders to understand technical needs and communicate analytical findings through technical reports, presentations and recommendations that support business decisions.
  • Lead cross-functional analytical projects involving local and global stakeholders, ensuring delivery of technically robust and business-relevant outcomes.
  • Systematically summarize and record analytical experience as technical document.
  • Define and lead to develop a medium to long-term analytical capability roadmap aligned with Castrol technology and local business strategies.
  • Monitor external analytical technology trends, evaluate emerging techniques and work with vendors or external partners to identify opportunities for capability enhancement.
  • Ensure analytical instrumentation, methodologies and laboratory practices are operated, maintained and documented in compliance with HSSE, QMS and audit requirements.
  • Coach and mentor analytical technologists to strengthen technical capability, investigation quality, project delivery discipline and stakeholder communication.
  • Connect with global analytical communities and actively contribute to global capability development, method harmonization and knowledge sharing initiatives.

Job Holder Requirements:

  • Degree or above in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science or relevant scientific discipline, with typically 5+ years of relevant industrial analytical experience. Candidates with a master’s or PhD degree and strong investigational analysis experience are preferred.
  • Expertise experience with advanced analytical test techniques such as FTIR, GC, GC-MS, HPLC-MS, SEM-EDX, HPIC, NMR, GPC.
  • Technical experience with lubricant, additive, grease formulation knowledge is desired.
  • Fluent oral and written English communication is required.
  • Strong self-motivation on defining problem, identifying approaches on problem solving and strong execution on actions.
  • Demonstrated capability in technical literature research, knowledge synthesis and professional technical report writing.
  • Digital excellence using informatics, data management, processing and visualization tools is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical or cross-functional projects is preferred
